This paper reviews the development of a high-contrast high-intensity petawatt-class Ti:sapphire chirped-pulse amplification (CPA) laser for research on high field science. We discuss in detail the design, performance and characterization of the laser. We also describe the on-going upgrade of the laser system and some applications for the laser in relativistic dominated laser-matter interactions.

Seeding of extreme ultraviolet free electron laser with high-order harmonic

Proceedings of European Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics and the 12th European Quantum Electronics Conference (CLEO/Europe-EQEC 2011) (CD-ROM), 1 Pages, 2011/05

We succeeded in generating the seeded free electron laser (FEL) with wavelengths of 61 nm at the SCSS test accelerator. The 13th (61 nm) harmonics generated by focusing the high peak power Ti:Sapphire laser to the Xe gas cell was directed to the undulator. This is first realization of the seeded FEL in extreme ultraviolet region.

Proceedings of Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics and The Quantum Electronics and Laser Science Conference (CLEO/QELS 2010) (CD-ROM), 2 Pages, 2010/05

We have demonstrated efficient second harmonic generation (SHG) of high energy fundamental Nd:YAG laser pulse energy of the multi-joule (J) level at 10-Hz using high optical quality top-seeded solution growth CsB$$_{3}$$O$$_{5}$$ (TSSG-CBO) crystal. SHG output energy of 1.2 J is obtained with a conversion efficiency of 60%. These results indicate that CBO is a good candidate material for high energy SHG of Nd-doped lasers at the several J level or more with high repetition rate.
